How to Place a Bid

Bidding Tips

We suggest the following tips BEFORE you bid on an item.

1)      When you bid, you automatically enter into a legally binding contract to purchase the item from the seller if you are the winning bidder.

2)      If seller does not receive payment from you, they can file a dispute with rhodesmarket.com.

3)      Carefully review the item listing and make sure that you understand the seller’s terms.

4)      Unless the seller states a warranty or a return policy, you are buying “as is”.  So do your homework prior to bidding.

5)      Should the seller have requirements that you can’t meet, email the seller to discuss this BEFORE you bid.

6)      Make sure you can accept the seller’s method of payment

7)      After reviewing the pictures and item description, you still have questions, email the seller BEFORE you bid.

8)      Check the seller’s feedback.  See if there has been multiple negative feedback.

When you bid, you automatically enter into a legally binding contract to purchase the item
from the seller if you are the winning bidder.

Auction

Bidding on an auction is done in specified increments. The user with the highest successful bid "wins" the auction and the ability to purchase the item. Auctions use Proxy Bidding (see definition below).

Bidding Increments

The bid increment is the amount by which a bid will be raised each time the current bid is outdone.  It is bases on the current high bid.  A Bidder may be outbid by less than a full increment if the winning bidder’s maximum bid beats the second highest maximum by an amount less than the full increment.  If you were bidding against another bidder’s maximum bid, your bid would have to meet the other bidder’s maximum bid plus one cent to become the current high bidder on the item.  Click here for bid increments chart.

Classified Ad

There is no bidding on Classified Ads.  To purchase an item listed in a classified ad you begin by contacting the Seller directly.  You can do this by emailing the seller or if there is a phone number in their listing then call them.

Fixed Price Item

You can immediately buy this item.  A Fixed Price listing does not allow bidding. The seller specifies the only acceptable price for the item(s). You can sell one item or multiple identical items with one Fixed price listing. Because there is no bidding on fixed priced listings, all items are Buy Now.

Proxy Bidding

Proxy bidding automatically places bids on your behalf at the lowest possible increments.  You just simply enter your maximum bid, the highest amount you are willing to bid, and the click “Review Bid”.  Then enter your user name and password and double check the amount that you are bidding.  If this is correct, click “Accept Bid”.  If this is incorrect, either go back using your browser to the previous page to correct bid amount or click “Cancel This Bid”.

The object of proxy bidding is for you to win the auction at the lowest possible price.  Your maximum bid is only placed when another bidder bids up to that amount or when the reserve price equal to or greater than your maximum bid.  Bids will increase based on the bid increments set for the auction.  The current bid will equal the former bid plus the bid increment.  Your proxy bid is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller.

Example: Let’s say that an item’s current bid is $5.00, and the bid increment is $1.00.  You choose proxy bidding and enter a maximum bid of $10.00, you become the high bidder and the current bid reads $6.00.

Example: Let’s say that an item’s start bid is $5.00, and the bid increment is $1.00.  You choose proxy bidding and enter a maximum bid of $10.00; you become the high bidder at $5.00.  Then another bidder comes along and bids a maximum bid of $9.00.  They are immediately outbid.  The current bid would then be $10.00 since you had entered a higher maximum bid.

Trade

To trade an item, begin by making a trade offer. The "Seller" can accept or decline offers. If your offer is declined the "Seller" might send a counter offer. You can make multiple offers on any Trade listing. There is no bidding or buy now features.

Watch List
Add items to your Watch List that you are interested in bidding on. This way you can keep up with an item that you are interested in and want to keep an eye on.

Ask the Seller

Buyers have the opportunity to ask sellers question(s) about their item prior to bidding or buying.  There are two locations on a listing to where you can access the form  1) just under the location and listing start date 2) where it says Comments.  Click on either one of those and it will take you to the form to where you can send an email to the seller.  When the seller responds, you will receive an email.

Under the "Contact the Seller" in the "Comments" section, each question that is sent to the seller by all buyers will be posted along with the sellers response.  Using the "Contact the Seller" is a great way to inquire about an item BEFORE you bid or purchase.

PLEASE NOTE: If the seller includes an email address in their description of the item, sometimes the best way to contact them is by sending an email at that address instead of the "Contact the Seller" method.  This simply could be that they check that particular email address more often.  Also, if a phone number is listed in the description then that is usually the way the seller prefers to be contacted.
